Five Must-Try French Picnic Dishes This Summer!

in Journal

It’s summer time! The perfect time of the year to soak up the sunshine, lay on the grass in the park and enjoy your friends’ and families’ company. Why not organize a picnic? Here are a few tips and recipe ideas to play up the French rustic feel for your picnic menu.

1. Try the Savory Salad Niçoise

It’s a classic. The combination of fresh greens, tomatoes, potatoes, and tuna with sliced hard-boiled eggs is delicious and instantly refreshing. It tastes like summer afternoons in southern France!

2. The Legendary Quiche Lorraine

Quiche Lorraine is also a classic! It’s so tasty, easy to make and convenient to pack for a picnic. Made with eggs, cream, milk, bacon, or vegetables. We'd recommend pre-slicing them so you don't have to worry about carrying a knife in your picnic bag!

3. The Tasty Potato and Green Bean Salad

It’s a vegetarian alternative to the Niçoise Salad, and it’s just as refreshing and delicious! Combine boiled potatoes and green beans with white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt & black pepper, olive oil, capers and red onion. Toss it all together and voila! It’s so simple yet so tasty.

 4. There’s no French Picnic without Bread, Cheese, Charcuterie and Wine!

The key to a French picnic is a good choice of bread! We recommend a freshly baked “baguette” or “pain de campagne” for a good “tartine” base for toppings. Don’t forget to pack the charcuterie if you eat meat! Saucisson, rosette, jambon are our favorites. Oh, and the French love to eat cornichons (gherkins) with those. Bread and charcuterie also call for cheese! Comté, Cantal, Fromage de chèvre (fresh goat cheese) are delicious.

Last but not least, a French picnic wouldn’t be French without wine. Pack bottles of rosé and white wine in a cooler for a perfect lunch.

5. And for desert…Classic French Palmiers!

Every picnic must include dessert —  right? Summer rhymes with sweetness and happiness. If you're hosting a French-themed picnic, palmiers are the perfect choice. These heavenly heart-shaped pastries will have you craving for more. And did we mention, you can add your own twist to them like candied ginger, a hint of cinnamon or lemon zest?

We recommend serving the palmiers with a fruit salad for a delightful end to your picnic – just a few bites of fresh fruit and fluffy palmiers to cleanse your palate and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Bon appétit!
